Maize & Maple is a handmade sophisticated children's apparel and footwear. This was my second business. It was named for the crossroads of my childhood home. I felt a deep connection to providing beauty and function to children's accessories with materials I cut, shaped and sewed by hand.
Popular at the time, though timeless as ever, were the style of leather baby shoes with an elastic closure at the ankle. While the ubiquitous brand had fringe, I created a style of my own, inspired by the classic eyelet scallop and bow, and the wingtip loafer. These shoes are easy to get on, comfortable for baby, and allows positive development of their feet while walking.
I noticed that little kids had a penchant for collecting things they found....everywhere. Attending adults are often the ones to hold these collections while the child plays. I created bags (in the same color ways as the shoes) with adjustable straps and a water resistant lining for easy clean-up of any sticky item gathered along the way!
Fluffy, soft and just like wearing a stuffed animal on your feet, my animal themed boots were a fun addition to any outfit. My family's favorite was the aptly named Chicken Legs, inspired by the Silkie breed chicken (not pictured).
My final collection was the Metallic Collection. Acquiring a color palette and suitable materials was gratifying process. These particular run of shoes lasted through 2 of my children before wearing out (about 4 years collectively). I also began to make hair accessories, knit beanies and faux fur blankets that worked as a set for easy gifting.
